Trainee Spotlight:
Kyanna White, joined us over 3 months ago and today we sat down to talk about her journey from University to now.
Hi Kyanna, can you tell me a bit about your experience at university and trying to look for a Traineeship?
I completed my undergraduate degree in History and Politics and I was unsure about what I wanted to do after graduating in the summer of 2019, but knew a Graduate Scheme was not for me. I was always interested in law but wanted to try finding experience in a local firm to make sure it was something I wanted to pursue. At the time I was helping my sister apply to university and stumbled across the online accelerated LLB at Robert Gordon University, and after looking in to it realised it was a perfect way for me to work and study at the same time. I got my LLB in 2021 then went on to do my Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Dundee, and towards the end of the course I began researching traineeships. I had an interest in pursuing a career in Personal Injury Law after completing the Personal Injury Elective during my Diploma, and I knew that I wanted to have a lot of client contact day to day so when I came across the advert from Gildeas Solicitors I knew I had to apply.
That’s great and how has your experience as a Trainee Solicitor been so far with Gildeas?
My experience so far has been excellent, I’m amazed at how much I have been able to learn in only 3 months. I did not expect to have my own cases so quickly but it’s been great, especially with the amount of support I have received from my manager. I have also been given the opportunity to carry out police precognitions.
How has it felt to start working on real life cases?
At the beginning I definitely felt overwhelmed and was unsure about my ability to conduct an initial call with clients, mainly because I was apprehensive that I may say the ‘wrong’ thing. There was a big change between the stimulated experiences at university and communicating with real clients. However, as I said, everyone in the office was incredibly supportive and were able to give me the confidence and reassurance I needed. I’m now at a point where I can easily call clients to check in and provide them with updates on their file while also answering any questions they have.
Lastly, what would you say has been the most rewarding moment of your journey so far?
I think interacting and engaging with clients have definitely been my most gratifying moments, the ability to help people and do everything I can to put them at ease of any worries they may have will always be one of the best parts of the job.
