Fergus Thomson

Phone: 0141 331 6071
Location: Glasgow
Fergus studied at the University of Aberdeen and qualified as a solicitor in 1999. Beginning at the former firm of Bishops from 1997 to 2004, Fergus then moved to Harper MacLeod for a decade, where he was in a team working in-house at Direct Line’s Insurance office in Glasgow. Fergus qualified as a Solicitor Advocate in 2009 which he notes as a career highlight. Fergus then joined us at Gildeas in 2015 as our in-house counsel.
As a Solicitor Advocate, Fergus is granted rights of audience in Scotland’s highest civil courts so can appear before the Court of Session and the UK Supreme Court. Fergus acts as our in-house counsel on our complex cases, working with our senior solicitors, and on some cases with an external KC as Senior Counsel. Fergus was previously accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a Specialist in personal injury law from 2007 to 2022 and aims to renew in 2025.
In addition to serving as our in-house counsel, Fergus sits as a part-time Tribunal Judge. He was appointed as a Legal Convener in the Social Security Chamber of the First Tier Tribunal for Scotland from 2024. This involves deciding on appeals on benefit applications, such as Adult Disability Payments as part of a panel.
A recent achievement for Fergus was finalising a substantial settlement in a case for a motorcyclist. His daughter had significant specialist care needs, and the man’s ability to care for her was significantly reduced due to his accident.
Outside of the office, Fergus sings in the Glasgow Gaelic Musical Association, which regularly wins prizes at the Royal National Mod.
